County Museum

In August we got to go to another meeting at a museum. It had some great exposures for the dogs, and we all had a blast! We even had the treat of getting to spend the meeting with a woman who is blind and has a guide dog from Southeastern Guide Dogs.

Guide Dog Meeting: Scavenger Hunt

Back in July we went to our area coordinator's house for a big scavenger hunt with all the dogs. It was lots of fun and it was great getting to see all the dogs and how much they had grown. We also got to see Magda, Charlotte's sister (see first post on Charlotte), who we haven't seen since we first got Charlotte!

Baity's Graduation

Well it's been over a month now since I announced Baity made it as a guide dog and I think it's about time I finally tell about our weekend down in FL meeting Baity and his new partner!

Once we got to the school on Saturday morning all the puppy raisers were read a letter from their dog's new owner about their life and how the dog was going to change their life. We then went outside and waited as one-by-one each dog and their partner come out and walked around for us all to see. It was exciting watching our puppies, all grown up, now leading and directing someone.

Baity and his new partner Jason!

Baity couldn't stop wagging and licking us he was so excited to see us!

Baity was content and happy with both his raiser and new partner by his side

Behind us you could see all the other raisers talking with their dog's new partners. It was a very exciting and emotional time.

Family photo!

Baity immediately went to sleep and was out the rest of the time. He's still the same old Baity!

Baity and Jason off to start their new lives together!

This is a picture of the three puppies named after the police officers who were killed in action. Baity (with his tongue out), Crawford (yellow), and Yaz (black). Both Baity and Crawford made it as guide dogs!

The police officer that Baity was named after was killed in St. Petersburg, FL during a rescue attempt of a follow officer. Ironically, Baity will now be living in St. Petersburg with Jason. While one life was taken in St. Petersburg, another life has been given in memory of the great police officer. His legacy will continue as Baity will now guide and protect someone in the city that the officer gave his life trying to protect and serve. I couldn't have been more proud to raise a puppy in honor of such a great man.

So while this chapter of Baity's life comes to a close, his adventures are just getting started with Jason....And let's not forget that Charlotte still has many more adventures coming her way!

Baity Update: He made it!!

As you might be able to tell from the title we have some exciting news about Baity! He has made it as a  guide dog and has been matched with a blind person! We just found out today and couldn't wait to share the great news. It came as quite a surprise because I just received his 4th monthly report last week. I assumed he had a few more months to go if he did in fact make it. But sure enough, he has made it. Along with some siblings as well!

In just a week we will get the opportunity to drive back down to the school and see Baity and his new partner. We know it will be an amazing experience and I am so excited for his new owner and the life they will have together as he becomes his or her companion and guide. He will make an amazing guide dog and friend.

I'm counting down the days until I get to watch Baity do what he was born to do... LEAD!

Kids Museum

Back in June we had a great puppy meeting at a kids center. It's kind of like a museum, but it has lots of activities and fun things for young kids to do. It's very important that we expose the puppies to all different ages of kids because many dogs can develop a fear of children if they are not introduced to them early on, or frequently. The trip was definitely a success and lots of fun!

Book Fair and Park Meeting

At the beginning of the month our family went to a book fair for the weekend that we have been attending each year for the past 4 years. We took Baity last year and it went so well I thought it would be great to take Charlotte. It was a lot easier this time because I knew where all the best "Busy" (potty) spots were. There is a huge section of the book fair with lots of booths selling books which provides lots of great distractions and new exposures. I was able to talk to many people interested in puppy raising and even ran into someone who used to puppy raise in our group!

Charlotte finally finished all her shots so she was able to start going to puppy meetings! We went to a park that had lots of animals, bridges, and a creek which were great exposures for the puppies. The weather was also amazing! That day it was about 70 with a light breeze which was perfect for walking around. Charlotte even got the courage to run through the creek. Which unfortunately resulted in a VERY dirty, wet puppy. Luckily the meeting wore her out, so the minute we were in the car she crashed.
